Year 3

As well as our daily maths, English and Reading sessions, we also learn through a theme-based curriculum using the ‘Cornerstone’ approach. This centres on the belief that children learn better when their interests and fascinations are allowed to flourish.

What we’re learning

Autumn 1

In the first half term of the academic year, we will be motivating our children through the topic ‘Mighty Metals.’ We explore the world of magnetism and find what sticks! Through forces we explore the development of mechanisms. During the topic we look at programming and put our skills together to build our very own robot! What makes a metal precious? Where does rust come from? Why are metals heavy? How can a ship float? All questions we will explore…

Autumn 2

Overwhelming awesome forces collide as Mother Nature makes herself known in the second topic – ‘Tremors!’ Tectonic plates collide and towns vanish under hot ash as we explore the last days of Old Pompeii! Fancy being a volcanologist? Experimenting with molten lava? No problem! This is the topic for you. During the topic we explore emergency services and response and look at the geology of the Earth. What? There’s a rumbling under the school! RED ALERT! What would YOU do in an emergency!

Spring 1

Our third project, ‘Tribal Tales,’ involves exploring our ancient pre-history. We turn off our modern technology, forget the hustle and bustle of every modern day life in this history based unit to explore what life was like before Youtube, electricity and mobile phones. Back to nature! Back to basics! Could we survive in prehistoric times? What was life like? How did people get food? What or who did they worship? We travel through the stone age, bronze age and iron age to discover what made pre-historic man tick! We tell tales around the camp fire and consider our values in life.

Spring 2

Scrumdiddlyumptious! A tasty topic to sink our teeth into! This topic explores food, photography and fantastic fruits. We create exciting recipes, and consider the wonderful writing of Roald Dahl. Take a trip with Charlie through the chocolate factory, or – if you are brave enough – dip into George’s marvelous medicine! On that subject, what are medicines, and how do they help us? We find out what is good for us and what isn’t. Art and design come together to culminate in making an amazing treat – Want to know what? Well you’ll just have to join in to find out!

Summer 1

As the summer starts we explore the urban environment through art and history. We visit the local town to explore the artistry of architecture, and the secrets of the town’s development hidden in plain sight in statues, plaques and historic buildings. In art we explore street art as well as designing our own fantasy kingdoms. The latest technology lets us explore the world from space, and light maps help show the population of our urban sprawl!

Summer 2

‘Gods and Mortals’ is our final topic, exploring both the history and mythology of Ancient Greece. What might the Gods had! What roles they played in the lives of man! But where did the Gods go? We explore modern Greece and the legacy of the past. What secrets are there to unlock from the past? So many – just be careful if you unlock Pandora’s Box!
