As well as our daily maths, English and Reading sessions, we also learn through a theme-based curriculum using the ‘Cornerstone’ approach. This centres on the belief that children learn better when their interests and fascinations are allowed to flourish.

What we’re learning

Autumn 1

In the first half term of the academic year, we will be motivating our children through the topic ‘Towers, Tunnels and Turrets’. Would you like to look at the castle ahead and see its mighty walls? Do you know any world famous towers and tunnels? Within this topic you will have lots of fun creating models of your own and learning about important places all around the world.

Autumn 2

Our second topic is called ‘Street Detectives’. This is all about our local community. Come and enjoy a walk around the village with your friends. Can you see old and new buildings? How are the streets different from long ago? Learn to create maps and give directions. Take part in traffic surveys and make comparisons. What do you like in Hockley Heath and how can the area be improved?

Spring 1

‘Coastline’ is our topic this term. This project will teach us about the physical and human features of coastal regions across the United Kingdom, including a detailed exploration of the coastal town of Whitby, in Yorkshire. We will also be making and strengthening structures, including different ways of joining materials.

Spring 2/Summer 1

This term we focus on the topic ‘Muck, Mess and Mixtures’. Let’s get messy! Muck and mess is good! In fact, it’s mega-marvellous. Pour, mix, stir, splat! How does it feel to get your hands covered in goo? Find out what creates the best bubbles? What melts the quickest? Create fair tests to explore and find out answers. Don’t worry about the mess, let’s have fun!

Summer 2

Our final topic of the year will be ‘Movers and Shakers’. We will find out about historically significant people who have had a major impact on the world. We will learn to use timelines, stories and historical sources to find out about the people featured and use historical models to explore their significance. We will also focus on still life artists and still life techniques.
