At Tudor Grange Primary Academy Hockley Heath, children learn science through a wide range of sources and investigations. These link to real life situations and support children’s understanding of how things work in the world we live in.

Science at our school is taught through key questions which are answered at the end of each unit. Children build up their skills and knowledge to answer these questions and learn the processes to find answers to these key questions. They use a variety of methods to find these answers including investigation and observation of real-life objects and sources. As children learn about science in the world, they also explore how scientists work. This includes them considering their specific line of enquiry, deciding on tests they would carry out and how they carry out these tests.  It is through this element of science that we aim to inspire pupils to ask questions, explore the world around them and even inspire some budding scientists for the future!

In each lesson, children will understand and use new scientific vocabulary. This vocabulary will be used in the context of their lesson and is referred to throughout their units of learning. As children progress through school, they will build up on the key knowledge and skills from previous years. They also broaden their understanding by finding out more, asking a greater range of questions and building on their secure understanding from previous years.
